If so, we may have the right position for you! Our co-op is currently looking for a Custodian for our busy Floor Support department.

The purpose of this position is to be responsible for the cleaning and basic maintenance of the entire store, inside and out. Ensure that the store is maintained in a clean, safe, and orderly condition. Responsible for keeping the co-op sparkling on a daily basis. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, with or without a reasonable accommodation. Schedule is Thursday through Monday. 30-34 hours weekly.

Customer Service

It is the primary responsibility of every employee of the Co-op to serve our members and customers with a superior shopping experience by using excellent customer service skills. This includes, but is not limited to friendly, helpful interactions with members and customers, a willingness to assist all customers and members find the items they are looking for no matter where they may be in the store, and to explain store policies and procedures clearly, completely and concisely to customers. Employees should also report customer suggestions, comments and complaints to appropriate management and/or to document such in a Customer Feedback Form.

Department Operationsincludes, but is not limited to, the following:

Custodial Work

  • Develop interrelated systems and protocols to meet the janitorial needs of the store
  • Responsible for the cleaning of all areas including:
  • All floors and floor mats
  • Glass doors on retail equipment and coolers
  • All restrooms and maintain supplies
  • Outdoor parking lot areas and perimeter of store, cart areas, and entry areas
  • Walls, ceilings, windows, screens, HVAC vents, floor moldings
  • Department shelving, under registers, shelf strips
  • Café area, clean and disinfect tables, chairs, and children’s items
  • Trash, cardboard, recycling and compost dumpster enclosures
  • Address needs and clean break room including refrigerator
  • Ensure all trash and recycling bins are emptied, cleaned and appropriate for the area including registers, office and back-stock areas
  • Assist in maintaining safe entrance and exits during inclement weather, including spreading salt, sand and shoveling as needed.

Equipment and Repair Projects

  • Follow through on special projects, as assigned. May include such tasks as painting and basic physical plant maintenance.
  • Manage miscellaneous tasks including, but not limited to, the following: Sort bottles and cans for recycling, change light bulbs, clean air filters and exchange water filters etc.
  • Work with Department Managers on special projects
  • Coordinate work of sub-contractors on an as needed basis


  • Work with Store Manager and Assistant on equipment or supply needs
  • Forecast maintenance needs and prepare requests accordingly
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager
  • Oversee development and maintenance of department systems that are accurate, efficient and in the best interest of the store and the staff
  • Ensure compliance with health department, OSHA, Labor laws and other legal guidelines
  • Ensure cleaning supplies are ordered as needed
  • Use environmentally safe supplies and forward Safety Data Sheets to Safety Manager
  • Assist training co-workers in department knowledge and operations

Technical & Mechanical Skills

  • Use a telephone, printer, computer, copier
  • Operate equipment such as hand trucks, U boats, pallet jack, floor polisher, common carpentry tools and equipment

Mathematical Skills

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurement and volume

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Familiarity and knowledge of current trends in the natural foods industry
  • Experience serving the public
  • Previous janitorial or maintenance work in a professional business environment
  • Knowledge of appropriate cleaning methods and materials in order to maintain high standards

Work Environment

  • Noise level is moderate.
  • Will be required to use step stools, step ladders, box cutters and pricing tools
