JOB DESCRIPTIONUnder general supervision, performs cooking assignments of routine complexity; receives instruction from journey or supervisory level personnel in volume food preparation, cooking, and serving; and performs other related duties as required. The Cooks Assistant is the entry-level classification in the Cook series and reports to a supervisory or manager level position. This class is characterized by the duties of performing slicing, grating, measuring, and routine cooking procedures in support of journey level Cooks. Incumbents may be assigned to assist Cooks involved in food preparation for the patient nourishment, cafeteria, or salad/deli bar areas. The Cooks Assistant is distinguished from the Senior Food Service Worker by the former's responsibility to assist with and perform routine large quantity cooking assignments. This class is further distinguished from the Cook in that the latter performs large quantity journey level cooking assignments.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIESSlice and grate food items; measure ingredients for large volume food preparations. Cook routine items that include, but are not limited to, potatoes, macaroni, bacon, hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, desserts, and baked goods. Receive instruction from and assist Cook in preparation of volume meals utilizing prescribed procedures and recipes. Assist in the ordering, receiving, and storing of foods and supplies; maintain freezer and storage areas in clean, sanitary condition; clean food preparation work areas. Perform special food preparation assignments as directed by supervisory personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSOPTION I Education: Graduation from high school or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test. Experience: Eighteen months in a position equivalent to a Food Service Worker. OPTION II Education: Graduation from high school or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test. Experience: Six months in a position equivalent to a Senior Food Service Worker. OPTION III Education: Graduation from high school or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test. Experience: Six months of large quantity cooking experience in an institutional, military, large commercial kitchen, or similar setting which has developed skills in measuring and mixing ingredients according to recipes and number of persons to be served. ALL OPTIONS Knowledge of: Basic food preparation and routine cooking methods; materials, equipment and supplies utilized in volume food preparation; food handling sanitation methods and practices; food measuring and weighing techniques. Ability to: Assist in the preparation and cooking of food; perform routine cooking procedures with minimal supervision; read and understand instructions, labels, recipes, and menus; perform basic mathematical calculations; maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the position.
OTHER REQUIREMENTSPossession of a valid Food Handler Card or Food Safety Manager Certification.
