The primary purpose of the Apiary Inspector position is to enforce and implement provisions in the North Carolina Bee and Honey Act of 1977 along with specific Honey and Bee Regulations. The employee inspects apiaries within an assigned area for the presence of diseases and issues permits or certificates to ensure only disease-free bees and equipment are moved. The employee provides diagnostic services for local beekeepers and forwards samples to the NCDA&CS Bee Lab for verification and confirmation. This position provides educational opportunities and resources necessary for the state’s beekeepers to maintain adequate and healthy bees for pollination purposes. The employee inspects honey processing and packing facilities to ensure honey is processed under sanitary conditions and is properly labeled.
Must reside within territory which includes the following counties: Ashe, Alleghany, Surry, Wilkes, Yadkin, Alexander, Iredell, Davie, Davidson, Rowan, Catawba, Lincoln, Gaston, Mecklenburg and Cabarrus.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with beekeepers and other clients.
- Must have a complete understanding of bee culturing techniques and the behavior of bees.
- Technical and working knowledge of bee pests and diseases.
- Ability To quickly learn, understand and effectively implement state and federal laws/regulations related to the bee industry.
- Ability to effectively utilize computers, mobile technology and department software in work duties.
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma supplemented by college-level coursework in biology, ecology, social insect behavior, or microbiology and three years of experience in beekeeping; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
