Description :
Community Services Officer will perform the basic level police community services work. Perform a variety of duties within the Police Department in support of operational and field functions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. Shown are duties intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
Patrol and enforce curfew hours.
Prepare and issue citations as required.
Provide reasonable assistance to the Police Officer when requested.
Use crime prevention techniques and assist in educating the citizens in crime prevention strategies.
Assist in security at special events and/or games.
Report crimes and illegal activities to the Police Officer and assist where requested.
Assist in serving civil processes.
Be flexible and willing to rotate for specific events where the assistance from other CSO's may be requested.
Assist with animal control and/or wildlife issues.
Assist with corrections and guard duties if requested.
Be willing to assist in medical emergency.
Assist with game nights and activities that are being held in the community.
Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues, personnel records and Borough information.
Perform other duties assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the North Slope Borough Policies and Procedures.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Must be a responsible individual of reputable character.
Ability and willingness to participate in on-going professional training and development events and activities.
Ability to model appropriate behaviors, display good morals and values, and exercise sound judgment in working with children, young adults, families, colleagues, and community members.
Ability to conduct self in a manner which is respectful and encouraging of the cultural/spiritual beliefs and practices of others.
Ability to learn how to deter wild animals.
Ability to learn how to capture, control and contain animals.
Ability to learn and qualify with a shotgun and any other weapons deemed necessary to conduct duties.
Skill in writing and completing accurate reports and observations.
Ability and willingness to learn how to fill out documents and inputting documents.
Not use marijuana or any illegal substance.
Clean criminal background.
Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required: Be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien who has demonstrated an intent to become a citizen of the United States;
18 years of age or older;
High school diploma or G.E.D./or, a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience;
Not been convicted of one or more of the following offenses, or of an offense with substantially similar elements to such an offense under Alaska law: a. a Felony;
b. a misdemeanor within five years of the date of hire, if the misdemeanor does not involve an act listed under (c.) of this paragraph;
c. a misdemeanor within 10 years of the date of hire, if the misdemeanor involves an assault against a family member, former family member, member of the individual's household, or former member of the household; or
d. he violation of a domestic violence restraining order; or
e. two or more DUI offenses Has not: a. Illegally manufactured, transported, or delivered
b. A controlled substance; or
c. An alcoholic beverage in violation of a local option under AS 04.11 or a municipal ordinance;
d. Illegally used a controlled substance other than marijuana during the 10 years immediately before the date of hire, unless the person was under the age of 21 at the time of using the controlled substance;
Valid Alaska driver's license that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria;
Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certificate within the first nine months of hire;
Ability to pass a required training program within the six month probationary period
Ability to pass a pre-drug screening test
Ability to lift 30-50 pounds regularly;
Ability to pass a thorough personal-history investigation of the person to determine character traits and habits indicative of moral character.
