The Director of Advanced Practice Providers, Cardiovascular Institute develops and leads an advanced practice operational and strategic infrastructure in alignment with the goals of UAB Medicine and the CVI service line. This role ensures the delivery of high quality and cost-effective care, based upon competency and evidenced based clinical practice and research. The Director has expert comprehension of advanced practice contributions to the service line and institution-wide initiatives and leads advanced practice providers in contributing to organization-wide initiatives developed by UAB Medicine. Supports and often leads in the development, pursuit and achievement of strategic organizational and service line goals. The Director presents information and data to senior department/service line/organizational leaders regarding the value of advanced practice providers to the organization’s quality, safety, patient experience, and fiscal goals. This leader demonstrates financial accountability with operating budgets, provider billing and productivity benchmarks. Additionally, he/she maintains expertise in clinical competency for inpatient or outpatient clinical care. The Director leads multiple advanced practice teams across the continuum, usually greater than 100 providers, and has direct oversight for team managers and team leaders. This leader has substantial expertise in the management of large teams and in project management.
SUPERVISION: Reports directly to the UAB Medicine senior executive leader for Advanced Practice Providers. Additional reporting to department/service line administrative and physician leadership as applicable.

This role ensures the delivery of high quality and cost-effective care, based upon competency and evidenced based clinical practice and research. A Director demonstrates the ability to lead individuals/teams across disciplines and possesses an ability to work with all levels of staff within a multidisciplinary group. A Director leads Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and Physician Assistants to contribute to organization-wide initiatives developed by UAB Medicine. This leader demonstrates financial accountability with operating budgets, provider billing and productivity benchmarks. Additionally, he/she maintains expertise in clinical competency for inpatient or outpatient clinical care. The Director leads multiple advanced practice teams across the continuum, usually greater than 100 providers, and has direct oversight for team managers and team leaders. Position Requirements:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: Master’s Degree in Nursing, or a graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Anesthesia program, or a graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program. Seven years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Preferred: Additional masters in health care related field of study and/or advanced degree beyond initial advanced practice degree such as Doctor of Nursing Practice or Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing, or Master of Science in Health Administration.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND/OR REGISTRATION:
Required: If APRN, current Alabama Registered Nurse License and current Alabama Advanced Practice Nursing License required. Must have and maintain national board certification as Nurse Practitioner for associated patient population. If Physician Assistant, must have and maintain national board certification and registration under Alabama Board of Medical Examiners. Basic Life Support Certification

  • Has substantial experience as a unit and operational leader, demonstrating skill in the administrative and operational functions and structure within the organization and across the health system.
  • Expertise in transformational leadership, developing advanced practice nurses, physician assistants and others into leadership roles.
  • Expert in consensus-building and negotiation.
  • Demonstrates expert ability to lead meetings effectively, achieve consensus among interprofessional groups and navigate conflict. Communicates effectively orally and in writing.
