The mission of The Charter School of Wilmington is to prepare students to thrive through world class mathematics, science, and technology education.
CSW was established in 1996, has a current enrollment of 950+ students in grades 9-12 from seven public school districts, a student/teacher ratio of 21:1, and a 99% college placement rate. CSW offers a college preparatory program with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as a focus. Ranked #3 on Niche’s 2019 Best Charter Schools in America list, #1 STEM school by Niche in the Philadelphia region (January, 2019), #19 STEM high school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report (May, 2018), and is also a U.S. Department of Education National Blue-Ribbon School.
To prepare students who are:
  • Thoroughly educated in mathematics and science.
  • Broadly educated in the humanities.
  • Technologically literate and understand the operation and use of computers and laboratory instruments.
  • Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Firmly grounded in character development.
CSW offers 20+ sports teams for students to participate in throughout the year, in addition to various other clubs and organizations. CSW students also have the opportunity to participate in several service projects and volunteer opportunities to make a positive impact on the community.
CSW currently has 70 faculty and staff, many of whom have advanced degrees.
Formed by a consortium of six local companiesDuPont, Ashland (Hercules), AstraZeneca, Christiana Care, Delmarva Power and VerizonCSW is chartered by the Red Clay School District. The Board of Directors are appointed from these founding companies along with parents, teachers and other community members. The Board upholds the philosophy and mission of CSW, manages the strategic planning process, oversees the financial wellbeing of CSW and hires/evaluates the school President.
Located 30 minutes south of Philadelphia, mid-point between New York and Washington DC, Wilmington, DE is in the middle of it all with a unique blend of old and new. As the leader of CSW, the President will support and uphold the strategic pillars of CSW including:
  • Engage Stakeholders- Build and strengthen partnerships between the school internal and external stakeholders and engage the wider community.
  • Academic Excellence- Support the academic, social, emotional, and physical growth of our students with high expectations for all.
  • Innovative and Emerging Technology, Techniques, and Curriculum- Develop independent thinkers who are intrinsically motivated by real-life experiences where students can learn.
  • Financial Strength- Practice financial stewardship and raise funds to move CSW forward in accomplishing its strategic objectives.
Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following:
  • Develop and maintain an inclusive environment through building of partnerships, trust, and transparency with students, faculty, staff, parents, and community.
  • Ensure every element of school life reflects principles of diversity, equity, justice, and the dignity of all individuals.
  • Formulate and execute a framework to increase awareness, drive innovation in academic programs, lead adoption of new technologies, and have a growth mindset.
  • Foster an environment where faculty and staff are engaged, motivated, and be provided with professional development opportunities.
  • Lead administrative team and ensure accountability in overall daily operations including attracting and retaining top talent, on-boarding staff, performance management, budgeting, accounting, auditing and financial planning.
  • Develop, oversee, and implement marketing, development, and outreach programs to continue building on CSW’s reputation and attract support for fundraising opportunities.
  • Lead CSW’s voice and face in community and educational associations to market school’s well-being.
  • Provide effective communications, clear expectations, and measurable goals.
  • Manage complex situations, tap into resources, balance benefits with all stakeholders, and develop comprehensive solutions.
  • Partner with Board of Directors in support of the strategic plan and educating on the uniqueness of CSW culture and public education.
  • Manage attractive, organized, functional, healthy, and safe facilities.
  • Navigate relationship with Red Clay school district to ensure support is consistent.
Successful candidates should have:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven track record of leadership and management experience with an entrepreneurial spirt and knowledge of current trends in education.
  • Capable of generating creative solutions and meeting challenges with resourcefulness.
  • Experience being a strategic thinker, relentless achiever, great collaborator, strong communicator, and have an overall genuine connection with students.
  • Ability to inspire respect and trust combined with displays of passion and optimism.
  • Experience in providing a richer academic environment through fundraising and creation of successful development/capital campaign programs.
  • Ability to tackle issues objectively and creatively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to, and accountability for, a rigorous academic environment.
  • Understanding of being in front of boards, legislatures and other stakeholders.
  • Familiarity working in a union environment.
